A few short writings and thoughts...

Education Addressing the Real Illiteracies
An essay examining contemporary notions of  liberal education, and proposing a unique model.

The Trouble With Marion
A melodramatic scene that may one day be recycled for use in a longer work of fiction...

Two Sonnets
Two very different sonnets, along  with some comments and notes regarding the form, and some hints for  dealing with metrical intricacies

The Legend of Alex and The Apple Trees
A ludicrous fairy tale, with an underlying message about social prejudices (incomplete)

Plays With Food
A quick, just slightly creepy short-short story

The Wife of Bath: Common Sense Ethics in a World Ruled by Dogma
A critical essay analyzing the Wife of Bath's Tale in Chaucer's Canterubury Tales.  Utilizes Eisner's research on possible sources and connections to Sir Gawain.

Alice, The Wife of Bath, Tells Another Story
A creative exercise; a mimicry of Chaucer, but in modern English.  A Companion piece to the critical essay above.

I'm a writer.  At least, on good days, I like to call myself a writer.  Some days, I call myself "a student of writing"... and on particularly bad days, I call myself "a guy who maybe, one day, is finally going to learn how to write."

I'm currently enrolled at the Hamilton-Holt School at Rollins College, where I'm studying for a BA in English, with a strong writing curriculum.  This semester, for example, I'm taking a writing workshop that focuses on a different form each time it meets, covering everything from Art Critiques to Sonnets, Memoirs to Short Stories.  To say the least, it's been an interesting ride.

I'm working on my first "real" novel this year.  It's a character-driven book that examines the process of growing self-awareness in a particularly self-absorbed spoiled brat Irish Catholic fratboy.  I was inspired (to write a novel,  not to write this particular one) by my friend Marianne, who participated in the annual NaNoWriMo last November.  I figured, if Marianne can write a novel, so can I.  Mine is going to be much better than hers *wink*... but then, I'm not going to write it in a month, either.

Several  of my short writings are posted on the site.  As always, I welcome useful feedback.  Enjoy reading.
